The Gospel Comes with a House Key
The Daily Grind (3|3)
The Basics of Hospitality
• Radically Ordinary Hospitality Includes the Children and Values Their Concerns
Pages 172-177

TOGETHER read the book and discuss the content below.
INDIVIDUALLY take notes in your journal on what stands out (try to keep it brief).

Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV) For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Matthew 18:10 (NIV) “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

Mark 10:14-16 (NIV) When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Matthew 18:3-5 (NIV) “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”

1 Peter 2:2-3 (NIV) Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Matthew 11:25 (NIV) “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.”

Psalm 127:3 (NIV) Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.

Radically ordinary hospitality includes the children and values their needs.

Children roll grief around with different worldviews about good people and bad people.

TOGETHER pray for one another.

INDIVIDUALLY answer the questions in your journal - process your notes and pray.

Spend some time in God’s Word and in prayer for the children in your life. If God gives you a word, a picture, or a thought about a child in your life - journal about it.
Below are the scriptures from above to use as a guide as you pray.

Psalm 139:13-14 – Children are miracles made by God
Matthew 18:10 - Each child is precious to God
Mark 10:14-16 - The Kingdom of God belongs to them, too
Matthew 18:3-5 - Welcoming children is welcoming Christ
1 Peter 2:2-3 - They set an example for our spiritual growth
Matthew 11:25 - Jesus gives them the gift of understanding
Psalm 127:3 - Children are a treasure

As you are praying - feel free to use your own words as you reflect on this chapter - or pray the prayer below:
Dear Lord, thank you for being the giver of all things good in me. Thank you for the gifts and strengths in my life. I want to leverage them for the good of others. Would you help me find creative, sacrificial, and faithful ways to do that? Open my eyes to the needs of those around me, and intersect my passions with their needs. Make me compassionate and sensitive to those around me, even those who are strangers. Most of all, help me abide in you and your strength rather than my own, for the daily grind of bearing another’s burdens, takes more strength than I have.

EXTRA READING:

“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, that rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

- Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968)

PRAYER:
Lord, as we wake from another night’s slumber, we are reminded that your dreams are given to us and not merely conjured up by our imaginations. Help us understand both that your dreams come at a price and that their rewards are immeasurable. Amen.
